I first came to StarShine Academy as an information technology consultant several years ago. My initial contributions were to optimize the computing resources for the curriculum, and to organize the network for ergonomic and campus wide Internet access. I have maintained and built out the computing infrastructure ever since. In the fall of 2007, I joined the faculty full time and now fulfill a dual role of Middle School/High School instructor at our St. John campus and Technology Director for all of StarShine.
I learned early on that I was interested in how things and the world work. This led to a diverse set of experiences, including picking up hay bales in my native state of Iowa, a stint fixing rails on the railroad, various construction positions, and a tour of duty as a US Army military policeman. Like many Viet Nam era veterans, I used my spare cash on stereo and camera gear and set up my own development darkroom.
I attended vocational school for masonry trades and ultimately earned a university degree in Zoology and Computer Science. Once the degree was obtained, I focused on computers and computing. I learned to design software packages at a small software firm in the Valley where I rose to the position of Vice President of Technical Services. This led to a position with Intel Corporation, where I spent over 11 years designing and implementing factory automation and materials tracking software. I resigned from Intel in Y2K (the year 2000 in computer speak!) to start my own consulting business, which again, led me to StarShine.
Like the rest of the StarShine team, I am amazed at the difference this school continues to make in so many lives. I can only hope that my talents will benefit the organization as it grows, offering the revolutionary concepts to many more communities.
